GF snub that could be final straw for Latrell

The Roosters are set to bring the ongoing contract saga surrounding superstar centre Latrell Mitchell to a head this week in a high-level meeting aimed at keeping the 22-year-old in Bondi after he was reportedly insulted by an offer of $800,000-a-year.

Holding on to Mitchell has proven a difficult task for the Roosters who failed to re-sign the two-time premiership winner ahead of the November 1 deadline, allowing him to shop his worth on the open market.

Reports of messy negotiations due to the fact that Mitchell's self-evaluation of his value is considerably higher than what the Roosters have so far been prepared to offer him, have opened the door for rival clubs to swoop, most notably the Canterbury Bulldogs, who are reportedly set to offer the star his desired $1 million-a-season.

But the Tricolours are not giving up without a fight, with the latest reports the club's powerbrokers are set to hold a high-level meeting with the prodigy, aimed at finding a solution to the protracted negotiations.

They'll have their work cut out for them, according to 9News rugby league reporter Danny Weidler, who wrote in his column for the Sun-Herald that Mitchell was left "insulted" by their latest offer of $800,000 and is genuinely considering a move.

"If you listen to those close to Mitchell, he is said to be insulted by the offer of $800,000 a year from the Roosters and is seriously considering moving on," Weidler wrote in the column.

"His first choice if exiting would have been Newcastle – the club nearest to his home town of Taree. Without an offer from the Knights, the Bulldogs may be an option."

Mitchell was also reportedly left miffed at the Roosters after feeling that he didn't receive the praise that teammates James Tedesco and Luke Keary had heaped on them after their recent premiership title.

While $800,000-a-season looks to be as high as the Roosters are willing to go, recent reports of meetings with the Bulldogs over a lucrative contract have rocked the league.

The Bulldogs made no secret of a mid-season move on Mitchell when they reached out to his family through a third party to gauge interest surrounding a seven-figure switch to Belmore.

Late last week, Canterbury Leagues Club chairman George Coorey met with Mitchell to pitch the big money move, while Australian boxing great Anthony Mundine was reportedly mediating negations between Mitchell and the club.

The 22-year-old has signed with a new manager, Wade Rushton, after managerial troubles coincided with a low period for Mitchell midway through the 2019 season, but that hasn't stopped people close to him from urging him to go with Mario Tartak, according to Weidler's column.

Despite Mitchell's long-standing history with the Roosters, who developed him from the age of 16 when he relocated from Taree to Sydney, cracks began to appear in the relationship at various stages this year.

In May, reports emerged the Roosters were aware there had been people in Mitchell's ear suggesting a move to the Rabbitohs would be the right fit for him in the wake of Greg Inglis' shock retirement.

An alleged altercation between Mitchell and members of the public in a pub on NSW's mid-north coast placed added strain on the relationship.
